Sentimental Journey

Join us in Lewistown for a fun, historical and inspiring “B-17 Weekend”

The Central Hangar of the Montana Pilots Association, in conjunction with the Lewistown American Legion Family announces “A B-17 Weekend”, June 8th-9th, 2018, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Lewistown Municipal Airport's use as a World War II training ground.

In 1942, the airport was transformed into an Army Air Force airfield. Training for the B-17 crews and staff was done here in Lewistown before they were deployed to the overseas battlefields.

Original plans for the event included an appearance, tours and rides on “Sentimental Journey”, one of ten B-17s still flying. However, due to mechanical difficulties, "Sentimental Journey" is grounded and will not be making appearances this summer.

Those who have purchased seats on a flight will receive a refund for their purchased seat(s) and be contacted by the B-17 Ride Team. Any raffle tickets that were purchased for rides will be refunded at the purchaser's request, or can be donated to defreay the costs of the event. Call 406-366-5086 for additional info.

The “B-17 Weekend” will officially open at 6:00 pm Friday, June 8th with an impressive ceremony hosted by the Lewistown American Legion honoring all Veterans with emphasis on POW/MIA soldiers.

After the opening ceremony, a special guest, brother of a B-17 crewmember killed in a training flight crash of a B-17 stationed at Lewistown, MT during our active base status, will share how he found his brother's dog-tags at the crash site some 54 years later.

The evening will continue with 1940’s era big band music and dancing in Lewistown’s restored B-17 hangar provided by “The New Harold Nichols Big Band / featuring John Gemberling and Beth Britton, vocalist”. Come dance the night away to the sounds of this lively and entertaining big band group from Great Falls, MT!

During the evening there will be a “Little Miss Rosy the Riveter” contest as well as displays of wartime memorabilia. Food vendors will be on site and camping sites will be provided for pilots who would like to fly in and spend the night, with motel accommodations also available in Lewistown.

Saturday will begin with the Central Hangar’s world famous pancake and sausage breakfast and fly in. Many planes will be arriving and on display, including a nice contingent of Piper Super Cubs and other back country type aircraft.

The Central Hangar wishes to invite any and all pilots to fly in for this weekend and enjoy the fellowship of the aviation community and is especially looking for any military type aircraft for display.

Young Eagles flights will also be given Saturday to introduce as many young people to aviation as possible. For flight info and airport conditions, call Jerry Moline, 406-350-3264.
